That’s according to the recent list of “The Philippines’ 40 Richest” published annually by business magazine Forbes . Shopping mall and real estate mogul Henry Sy and his family are now on top of the list, with US$3.1 billion net worth. Tycoon Lucio Tan and family are next, with net worth amounting to US$1.5 billion. Last year’s richest person, Jaime Zobel de Ayala , is this year’s biggest loser, with total net worth down by US$800 million after his Ayala Corporation’s stock price plummeted 46%. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) said it has created a fact-finding committee to investigate reports of a gang rape of a student by 15 fellow students as part of an initiation into an underground fraternity. The alleged gang rape “is a very unfortunate incident, though an isolated one,” the PUP said in a statement. The school said its officials are “grieved” about the incident and are cooperating with the police and the Department of Social Welfare and Development since minors are involved. The school administration assured “all involved that they will be protected in accordance with the law. Legal assistance and financial assistance will likewise be provided to the alleged victim.” The PUP said stricter security measures are being enforced in the campus and officials are closely coordinating with law enforcers.
